My Mix Alpha, First Phone With 108 megapixel camera

Once again Xiaomi is using its Mi Mix line to show us how it visualizes the future of smartphones. The name of the product that they show us today is Mi Mix Alpha and embraces the concept of "all screen" at levels that we would never have imagined: a panel that surrounds the entire device.

In recent weeks we have been listening to the "waterfall" concept, screens with extreme curves on their sides to significantly increase the use of the front. But the Mi Mix Alpha is one step ahead, instead of just folding the sides, it makes the panel follow its path and ends up at the rear of the device. There is only one section of the mobile that does not have a screen, and it is where its cameras are housed.

Xiaomi calls this technology as "4D Surrounded Curve Display".

But what will happen to accidental touches? Xiaomi is making use of recognition algorithms with artificial intelligence and sensors that will detect how we are using the smartphone to avoid these false positives.

Also, since there are no physical buttons, the same panel is being used to create virtual buttons that will have similar functionality. Each time we touch them they will return a haptic feedback with a vibration motor, to simulate the pressing of a traditional button.

As we see in the images. The bottom and top are the only ones that do not have a screen. There has been a titanium structure where the connectivity antennas are housed. Of course, this frame is minimal: 2.15 mm thick.

For those who wonder, the back screen section will also show information, only that this will depend a lot on the context in which we are using the smartphone and, of course, it will have a MIUI interface. But a use case is, for example, if we want to take a selfie: there is no front camera, so it would be enough to turn the mobile to see ourselves on the rear screen and take the photo.

The first smartphone with a 108 megapixel camera

Speaking of the camera, here is another one of the points where Xiaomi pretends to "be the first". The company is releasing the long-awaited camera with 108 megapixels of resolution. Yes, one hundred and eight megapixels.

Photos at maximum resolution are 12,032 x 9,024 pixels, promising to be able to zoom with as little loss of detail as possible. Other sensor data: it measures 1 / 1.33 inches in size, it has optical stabilization, its aperture is f / 1.69, it has laser focus and it can also take 27 megapixel photos joining four pixels in one thanks to pixel binning technology.

A full-fledged premium range

Not surprisingly, the Mi Mix Alpha has everything we expect to see on a high-end smartphone:

• Snapdragon 855+ - An improved version of the Snapdragon 855 with higher clock frequencies and a more powerful GPU.
• 12GB of RAM + 512GB of storage.
• 4,000 mAh battery with fast charge via 40W USB C cable.
• It's a 5G-ready smartphone: it incorporates Qualcomm's X50 modem.
• You cannot miss the classic: WiFi 5, Bluetooth 5.0 and GPS.

As an OS it runs Android 10, but with the personalization layer of the MIUI 11 house, which debuts a lot of novelties, both typical of the brand and those implemented by Google: night mode, a better Always On screen, the introduction of an app drawer and a new battery-saving system.

My Mix Alpha, price and availability

The Mi Mix Alpha will be priced as crazy as its own concept. In Xiaomi's homeland it will cost 19,999 yuan, that is, 2,814 dollars, which at the current exchange rate to Mexican pesos would be approximately 55,000 pesos. Becoming one of the most expensive smartphones in modern history.

There is no data that indicates that it will leave the Chinese market, and with that exorbitant price it is not known whether its manufacture will be massive. But at least Xiaomi can boast of being the first to show it to the world.
