The Cannes Film Festival hasn’t started yet and it’s already giving us great joy. Not the section of films in competition as such, but the market in which the rights to future films are acquired. Within those future projects, a very special one has just carved a niche for itself in the calendars of all moviegoers.

We will have a meeting of Forrest Gump with the film Here , directed, scripted and starring the same people responsible for the film that won the Oscar in 1995: Tom Hanks, Robin Wright, Robert Zemeckis and Eric Roth will join forces again in this film that adapts a acclaimed graphic novel. Film that has been acquired by Sony and is expected to hit theaters throughout 2023.

Because Here , the novel by Richard McGuire , as such has nothing to do with the story of Forrest Gump, beyond telling a great odyssey through time. But not that of a man, but that of a place, a small corner of a house . In the comic, a living room is first shown in 2014, first with a sofa, then without it and automatically the narrative moves to 1957, where there is a baby playpen and then a staircase… and so on until we go back to a time in which there was not even a house built.

It is difficult to imagine the protagonists of Forrest Gump in a story with so many time jumps, but if Zemeckis (director of the Back to the Future trilogy ) is an expert at something, it is precisely in making his characters change time without confusing anyone. McGuire’s novel, originally published in 1989, was considered at the time one of the most original and fascinating graphic novels of its time, with a reissue by the author himself 25 years later. That is why the project has been so easy to place in Cannes, even more so with a whole great team behind it, such as Forrest Gump.
